The Best Online HSC Economics Tutoring in 2026: How the Options Compare

Big tutoring colleges, on-demand platforms, private tutors and Economics specialists, compared on what actually moves an Economics mark: essay marking, current data, class size and price per hour. Written by a tutor, so read it knowing that.

We run Crown Economics, an online HSC Economics tutoring service, so we have an obvious interest in how this comparison comes out. We've tried to make it useful anyway. The prices below come from what providers advertised publicly in October 2026, and where another option suits a student better than we do, we've said so.

What actually matters in Economics tutoring

Most tutoring comparisons rank providers on things that are easy to measure and don't change marks much: how many subjects they cover, how slick the website is, how many students they have. For Economics, five things matter more.

The first is essay marking. Eighty of the hundred marks in the HSC Economics exam are written answers: 40 in the short answer section and 20 each for the two extended responses. You improve at that by writing, getting it marked against the actual criteria, and rewriting. A tutor who teaches content but rarely marks your writing is helping with the smaller half of the exam.

The second is how fast marking comes back. Feedback on an essay you wrote two weeks ago teaches you much less than feedback on one you wrote two days ago, because you've forgotten why you made the choices you made.

The third is current data. Economics is unusual in that part of the content expires. The cash rate, inflation, unemployment and the current account all move during your HSC year, and quoting old figures is visible to a marker. In 2026 alone the RBA has raised rates four times. Notes written in 2024 and reprinted since are a problem.

The fourth is whether the tutor specialises in Economics. A general tutoring college teaches Economics as one of many subjects. That can be fine. But the difference shows in the details, such as knowing which dot points the examiners keep criticising students on, or how the marking guidelines separate a 17 from a 20.

The fifth is price per hour of real teaching, which is easier to compare than term fees with different lengths and lesson times.

The options compared

Option Typical advertised price Economics specialists? Essay marking Best for
Large tutoring colleges (online classes) about $37 to $55 an hour in group programs Usually not. Economics is one of many subjects Varies, often limited Students wanting one provider for several subjects
On-demand tutoring platforms around $100 an hour for one-to-one sessions on standard plans No. Tutors are matched across subjects Depends on the tutor Flexible scheduling across subjects
Private tutors from listing sites mostly $60 to $90 an hour one-to-one in Sydney Sometimes Depends on the tutor Students who find a tutor they click with
Economics specialist programs from about $20 to $60 an hour in small groups Yes Usually built in Students who want depth in Economics
Free resources and self-study free n/a None Strong, self-directed students

A few notes on reading that table. Group programs at the big colleges look cheap per hour, but check how many students are in the room and how much of the price covers essay marking. One-to-one rates vary most with the tutor's own results and whether they are a qualified teacher. And private tutors are the hardest to judge in advance, because quality varies from excellent to poor at the same price.

Where Crown Economics fits

We are an Economics specialist, and HSC Economics is the only subject we teach. Every class and one-to-one session runs online over Zoom, on an interactive whiteboard so diagrams are drawn out live.

Group classes 1-on-1 mentorship HSC crash course
Price $600 a term ($20 an hour) $60 an hour $250
Format Ten three-hour classes a term, one a week, groups capped at 6 Private, flexible times Four-day intensive before Trials and the HSC
Essay marking Weekly, back within 48 hours Unlimited, back within 24 hours Daily during the course
Recordings Every class, uploaded within 24 hours Yes Kept until the HSC

Every option includes weekly essay marking against the HSC criteria, a full notes booklet each term rewritten against the current economy, recordings of every class kept until the HSC, a student portal for homework and feedback, and a direct line to your tutor between sessions.

The group price works out to $20 an hour, lower than any other group Economics program we found advertised, and $60 an hour for one-to-one sits at the bottom of the usual Sydney range. The two tutors are Tim (99.00 ATAR, 97 in HSC Economics) and James (99.50 ATAR, 8th in the state in Economics). You can see how we measure student results on our results page.

Tutoring isn't only for students who are struggling. A student in the 70s and a student in the 90s need different help, but both have marks to gain. Moving from 90 to 95 depends on detail in your writing that is hard to see in your own work.

Where we're not the right fit

If you want in-person lessons, we can't help. Everything we run is online. Our online versus in-person guide covers who that suits and who it doesn't.

If you want one provider for several HSC subjects, a large college is simpler. We only teach Economics.

If you specifically want a tutor who is a qualified, accredited teacher, ask about it directly. That applies to every provider, us included, because tutoring in Australia doesn't require a teaching qualification.

How to test any provider before you pay

Ask for a trial class. Any provider confident in its teaching will let you sit in on one, and we do too. During the trial, check three things:

  1. Are the examples current? If the tutor is still quoting a 2024 cash rate, the notes are stale.
  2. Does the class spend time on writing, or only on content?
  3. Can you ask a question and get a real answer, or is the group too big for that?

Then ask how long marking takes to come back, and ask to see an essay they've marked. A marked essay shows you more about a tutor than any website. Our guide to choosing an Economics tutor has the full list of questions worth asking.

The short version

For most students, the best online HSC Economics tutoring is a specialist who marks your essays often and quickly, keeps their data current, and keeps groups small enough that you can ask questions. That's what we built Crown Economics to be. Book a trial class and judge for yourself, and if it isn't for you, that's a perfectly good answer.

Prices for other providers are taken from their public websites and listings in October 2026 and may have changed. Check with each provider directly.
