HSC Economics tutoring in 2026 costs anywhere from nothing to more than $150 an hour. Most advertised rates fall between $40 and $100 an hour, depending mainly on whether lessons are one-to-one or in a group, and on who the tutor is.
The figures below come from rates advertised publicly by Sydney tutoring providers and listing sites in October 2026. We run Crown Economics, an online Economics tutoring service, so our own prices are in here too, and we've marked them clearly.
Typical rates by type of tutoring
| Type | Typical advertised rate |
|---|---|
| University student tutors | about $35 to $70 an hour, depending on their year of study |
| Private HSC Economics tutors (listing sites) | mostly $60 to $90 an hour |
| On-demand tutoring platforms | around $100 an hour for one-to-one on standard plans |
| Qualified teachers tutoring senior students | about $100 to $140 an hour on average |
| Exam specialists and former markers | $140 to $180 an hour or more |
| Group programs at tutoring colleges | about $37 to $55 an hour |
| Small-group Economics specialist programs | about $20 to $60 an hour |
The biggest driver of price is format. Group programs share the tutor's time, so the hourly rate is lower. The next biggest is the tutor's background: a teacher with years of HSC marking experience charges much more than a university student, and listing sites show tutors pricing themselves on their own ATAR and subject marks.
What a full Year 12 costs
Hourly rates are hard to compare across providers, because programs run different numbers of weeks with different lesson lengths. It's more useful to cost out the whole HSC year.
The HSC course runs from Term 4 of Year 11 to the exam in October or November of Year 12, so roughly four school terms, or about 40 teaching weeks.
| Approach | Rough cost for the HSC year |
|---|---|
| One-to-one, one hour a week at $80 | about $3,200 |
| One-to-one, one hour a week at $100 | about $4,000 |
| Group program at $1,100 to $1,400 a term | about $4,400 to $5,600 |
| Crown Economics group classes at $600 a term | about $2,400 |
| Crown Economics one-to-one, one hour a week at $60 | about $2,400 |
Those are estimates for comparison, not quotes. Most families don't tutor every single week of the year, and many add extra sessions before Trials.
The costs that don't show up on the price card
The advertised rate is often not the full cost. Before you sign up anywhere, ask about these.
Exam and holiday programs. Some providers charge separately for Trial preparation, holiday intensives or final exam courses, on top of the term fee.
Essay marking. Ask whether marking is included or extra, how many essays a week, and how quickly they come back. For Economics, this is the part of tutoring that moves marks most, so it matters whether you're paying for it.
Materials. Some programs charge for notes, workbooks or online platforms.
Minimum commitments. Some providers lock you into a full term or year, and some on-demand platforms require sessions paid in advance and several sessions' notice before you can stop. Read the cancellation terms before the first lesson, not after.
Travel. In-person tutoring at a centre costs travel time each week, which is a real cost even if it isn't on the invoice.
How to work out what you're really paying for
The hourly rate tells you what an hour costs. It doesn't tell you what you get for it.
A better test for Economics is cost per marked essay. Most of the marks in the exam come from written answers, and the fastest way to improve written answers is to write, get feedback against the actual marking criteria, and rewrite. So divide what you'll pay over a term by the number of essays that will be marked and returned with feedback in that term.
A $100-an-hour tutor who marks one essay a fortnight is charging a lot per essay. A cheaper program that marks every week, with feedback back inside two days, is better value even if the class itself is less personal.
The second test is how current the notes are. Economics content changes every year, because part of your evidence is this year's data. Paying for notes written for a previous year's economy means paying for material you'll have to update yourself.
What Crown Economics costs
We keep our pricing simple and list it publicly.
Group classes are $600 a term for ten three-hour classes, one a week, which works out to $20 an hour, in online groups capped at 6. One-to-one mentorship is $60 an hour. The HSC crash course is $250 for a four-day intensive before Trials and the final exam.
Every option includes weekly essay marking against the HSC criteria (back within 48 hours, or 24 hours for one-to-one students), a notes booklet each term rewritten against the current economy, recordings of every class kept until the HSC, a student portal, and a direct line to your tutor between sessions. Prices are per student and billed per term, and nothing is charged until we've confirmed your spot.
Our group rate is lower per hour than any other group Economics program we found advertised, and our one-to-one rate sits at the bottom of the usual Sydney range. The trade-off is that we're online only and teach only Economics. Our comparison of tutoring options goes through who that suits.
If the budget is tight
You can do a lot without paying anyone. NESA publishes every past paper with marking guidelines for free, and marking your own work against those guidelines is most of what a tutor does with an essay. The RBA and ABS publish all the current data you need. Our free resources guide lists the best of it, and our own articles, including worked solutions for every paper since 2015, are free to read.
The thing that's hardest to replace for free is an experienced second reader for your essays. If you can only afford a little tutoring, spend it on marking rather than on content you could read yourself.
Rates for other providers come from their public websites and listing sites in October 2026 and change often. Confirm current pricing with each provider.
